Re: Late 73 vs Summer 74
I am firmly in the 72' camp and if forced to pick would take late 73' over summer 74'.I feel that the improvisational skills of the band were stronger in 73' and beginning to decline somewhat in 74'.I think what helps make 73'-74 so popular is all the strong new material that was introduced, where as they were at their performance peak in 72',this is all in relation to their more jam oriented material. That is not to say that late 73' and summer 74' didn't provide a tremendous amount of top notch music. Both provided 4 top 25 all-time performances.
12/6-Here Comes Sunshine,Dark Star
6/20-Eyes of the World
6/28-jam out of Let it Grow
After checking my notes I found another 23 extraordinary performances in 73',and 12 in 74',from a pool of songs containing Dark Star,Playin',Other One,Bird Song,Eyes and Here comes Sunshine. It also yielded 9 great versions of Let It Grow,6 from 73' and 3 from 74'.
